    Mike has lived in Morriston for many years but was originally born in the Plasmarl area of Swansea. He is married to Anne and has a daughter, Catrin, who attends Ysgol Gyfun Bryntawe. He attended Plasmarl, Parklands and Penlan Schools, and then went on into higher education at Swansea University where he studied Material Science & Economics, graduating with a BSc. Mike then went onto take a PGCE in Further Education at Cardiff University. Active in local sport, Mike has been a football referee, coach and was secretary of Morriston town for several years. Currently, Mike is President of Ynystawe Cricket and Football Club and is a social member of both Morriston RFC and Glais RFC.

    Professional Background

    Originally a research scientist for British Steel at Port Talbot, Mike spent over 27 years as a senior lecturer in Pontypridd at Coleg Morgannwg, specialising in computing and information technology, before entering the Assembly in May 2011.

    Political History

    Mike has represented Morriston on the City and County of Swansea Council since 1989 and is due to stand down as a Councillor in May 2012. During his time as a Councillor, he held a number of senior posts on Swansea Council, including Leader of the Authority (1997-2001), Business Manager (2002-2004), Cabinet Member for Technical Services (2002-2004), and then Chair of the Council’s Finance Scrutiny Committee (2008-2009).

    During his time as Leader of Swansea Council, Mike was the Welsh Local Government Association spokesperson for both social services and information.

    Taking an active interest in education, Mike has been a governor of Swansea University, Swansea Institute, Mynyddbach and Morriston Comprehensives, Swansea College and is currently chair of the governors at both Glyncollen Primary School and Ynystawe Primary School.

    Additionally, Mike has been a non-executive director of Swansea NHS Trust between 1999 and 2005 and also served on the South Wales Police Authority between 1997-2000. Mike’s political interests include finance, local government, education and health.

    Assembly Committee Membership & Cross Party Group Membership

    Mike currently sits as a member on the Assembly's Finance Committee, Public Accounts Committee and on the Communities, Equality and Local Government Committee. Mike is also Chair of the Cross Party Group on Older People & Ageing as well as a member on the Cross Party Groups on Autism, Beer & The Pub, Co-operatives & Mutuals, Cancer and Deaf Issues.
