Mike Hedges AM joined Welsh Labour colleagues in supporting the lowering of the voting age to 16, in elections to the National Assembly.

The proposals will mean that in the next elections to the Senedd, in 2021 all those over 16 years old will be able to vote.

Mike Hedges said:

“I am delighted that 16 and 17 year olds in Swansea will have a say on who represents them in the Senedd.

“Welsh Labour have been campaigning on this issue for a long time”

“This is about enabling young people to have a real say in their nation and their future.”

It is not the final stage in the passage of the bill through the assembly, but yesterday’s votes were a key part of the process.

I know how annoyed 16 and 17 year olds were that they did not have a vote in the EU referendum and as more than one said to me “it is our future and we cannot vote on it”
