Mike Hedges AM is supporting safer internet day, today. Over 100 countries around the world celebrate Safer Internet Day. Safer Internet Day is a global awareness day to promote good practice in online safety and gives advice and guidance on the risks posed by new technologies such as social media and how to stay safe while using them.
Today the Welsh Labour Government are launching a new Online Safety Zone on the Hwb, the national digital learning platform for Wales, which has been developed to support teachers, parents and learners in this critical area. The dedicated area will host news, articles and a range of resources on various online safety issues to help keep learners safe. It will also signpost those dealing with the effects of online bullying or any online safety issues towards appropriate support services.
Mike Hedges said “The internet is a fantastic resource and it aids the learning of children across (constituency/region). It is however important that they are safe online and that is why Safer Internet day is such a good idea and why I am supporting it”
“When I speak to parents at schools and events across (constituency/region) they often raise online safety and I am pleased that the Welsh Labour Government are taking their concerns seriously”
“Today’s announcement of the new Online Safety Zone should really signpost parents and learners to the right advice”
In Wales, the Welsh Labour Government is committed to promoting the safe and positive use of technology to our children, young people, parents and teachers. The day offers the opportunity to raise awareness of what is happening in Wales to safeguard Welsh learners online and highlight responsible use of technology in schools, colleges and in the home.
Over the past year the Welsh Labour Government have significantly increased investment in online safety activities to £170,000 a year to deliver training to around 2,300 practitioners and increase take-up of the 360 degree safe Cymru tool amongst schools in Wales.
