Mike Hedges AM welcomes Welsh Governments continued support for hard pressed families

A local Assembly Member, Mike Hedges AM has welcomed the Welsh Labour Governments continued commitment to the council tax reduction scheme

The scheme helps hard pressed families in Swansee to pay their council tax bills.

Today’s announcement will ensure that approximately 300,000 vulnerable and low-income households in Wales will continue to be protected from any increase in their council tax bills.

Mike Hedges AM said: “This is good news for many hard pressed households across Swansea East who will continue to receive support with their council tax bills”

“Households that in many cases have felt the full force of the UK governments cruel and shambolic welfare reforms.”

“I would urge residents who think they may be entitled to support with their Council Tax bills to contact Swansea City Council”

The Welsh Governments approach is in stark contrast to the situation in England, where local authorities have been left to design their own schemes and manage the associated funding shortfall. As a result, council tax liability varies by local authority, a multitude of different schemes operate and over two million low-income households are faced with having to pay more of their council tax bill.

If you are liable to pay council tax, either as a homeowner or a tenant, and you live in the property as your main residence, you might be able to get a CTR. To be eligible you must:
• have a low income, or
• Receive certain welfare benefits.
